Medium Toast Oak Cubes - 3 oz
Hungarian oak medium toast cubes displayed a high perceived-vanilla content with roasted coffee, bitter- sweet chocolate and black pepper characters. Use 3 oz. for 5 - 6 gallon batches.
Oak cubes are made from the exact same wood as the staves for oak barrels but are cubed for use by the home brewer. The advantage of oak cubes over chips is that liquid will penetrate into the wood from all 6 sides over time. This will maximizes the efficiency of the extraction of oak flavors.
Cubes require longer contact time over chips due to the thickness of the wood. It is felt that this longer contact time is beneficial as flavors are more developed and complex.
Contact Time for Various Oak Products
- Chips (around 7 days)
- Cubes (2 months minimum, up to 1 year of useful life)
- Segments (3 months minimum, 18 months of useful life)
- Staves (3 months minimum, useful life of 2 years)
